Sheriff’s Deputies arrived to find a male with no signs of life trapped inside a van. Sheriff’s Office Special Traffic Investigators (STI) were summoned to the scene.

The investigation revealed a green 2003 H2 Hummer was traveling westbound at the 17300 block of Alameda Ave. when it veered onto the eastbound lane of traffic and collided with a green 1996 Plymouth Voyager traveling eastbound. The driver of a  third vehicle, a maroon 2001 Oldsmobile Alero, was traveling behind the Plymouth Voyager when the crash occurred and lost control of his vehicle and collided into the Voyager(van).

The driver of the Voyager (van), was identified as 36 year old Manuel Martinez from Tornillo, Texas, who was found dead on the scene. All occupants of the Hummer, (3) adults and (3) children were transported to a local area hospital(s) with non-life threatening injuries. The driver of the third vehicle did not report any injuries. Sheriff’s Deputies suspect the driver of the Hummer was driving under the influence of alcohol.  Criminal charges are pending against the 46 year old driver of the Hummer. The investigation continues with toxicology results also pending. The Texas Department of Transportation assisted by providing traffic control barriers as a precaution to motorists as well as clean up.

This marks the 4th fatality in El Paso County investigated by the EPCSO Special Traffic Investigators this year.

UPDATE:  The driver of the 2003 Hummer, identified as Tomas Pinon, was charged with the offense of INTOXICATION MANSLAUGHTER with a bond of $25,000.
