EL PASO COUNTY TEXAS- On May 21, 2012 thru June 3, 2012 the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office in coordination with the Texas Department of Transportation (TXDOT) put into effect a grant utilized for seatbelt enforcement. With the Campaign’s purpose in mind, Officers issued over 296 citations to adults not wearing a seatbelt and 134 citations that resulted in a child not wearing one. Officers worked a total of 156 man hours from May 21st-June 3rd yielding the following Click-It-Or-Ticket statistics:

Although the campaign targeted safety belt violations, Officers also responded to calls for service and issued other citations for traffic violations. It only takes a few minutes to strap on a seatbelt with the end result of saving a life. This Memorial Day enforcement wants to ensure all motorists buckle up.
Traffic crashes remain a leading cause of death in Texas. In 2011, nearly 3,000 people died in fatal collisions on Texas streets and highways. Almost half of those drivers and passengers were not buckled up. Wearing a seat belt reduces the risk of fatal injury by 45 percent for car occupants and 60 percent for light-truck occupants.
