EL PASO, TX- On 04-17-2012 at approximately 1:00 p.m., El Paso County Sheriff’s Office Special Traffic Investigators were summoned to Interstate 10 Mile Marker 4, El Paso County, TX in reference to a motor vehicle rollover accident. Their investigation revealed that a 1998 Ford Expedition was traveling west on Interstate 10 when a tire from the Ford Expedition blew out causing the driver to lose control of the vehicle. The vehicle went off the roadway and rolled over. The 69 year old female passenger was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the vehicle. She was transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. The driver, Pedro Mejia (79) did not claim any injuries. At around 2:00 p.m. the female passenger, Bertha Mejia (69) was pronounced dead at the hospital. Speed or alcohol are not contributing factors and no charges are pending. The investigation is ongoing.
