DEPUTY BADGE WHT

EL PASO, TX- Early Friday morning on 12-09-11 at approximately 2:40 AM Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to the intersection of Montana Ave. and Zaragoza Rd. in reference to a single motor vehicle accident.

Deputies arrived to find an 2002 yellow Ford GT Mustang upside down on the eastbound lanes of Montana Ave. with severe damage and at least one occupant pinned inside the vehicle with no signs of life, possibly male. The victim has not been identified. Sheriff’s Office/Special Traffic Investigators (STI) were summoned to the scene.

According to witnesses, who were also traveling northbound on Zaragoza Rd., were passed by the Ford Mustang who was seen traveling on the center lane of Zaragoza at a high rate of speed. Witnesses later saw the same vehicle was involved in an accident.

UPDATE: A preliminary investigation by STI’s has indicated the driver of the Ford Mustang was traveling northbound on N. Zaragoza Rd. at a high rate of speed on the southbound lanes of N. Zaragoza Rd. when the driver of the mustang veered to the right, struck and drove over a center unprotected median on N. Zaragoza Rd. The mustang then traveled across the northbound lanes and drove over a second unprotected median when it lost control and traveled across the eastbound lanes of Montana Ave. The vehicle struck the wall of the Montana overpass and rolled over several times landing on its roof on the eastbound lanes of Montana Ave. Speed is a factor in this case. Alcohol is a possible contributing factor as beer cans were found amongst debris and inside the vehicle.

The driver was identified as 20 year old Jeffery Craig Bobon from Colorado. Mr. Bobon was a soldier currently stationed at Fort Bliss and was in the US Army for over two years. Next of kin was notified.

The investigation continues with toxicology results pending.  This marks the 12th fatality in El Paso County.
