DEPUTY BADGE WHT

EL PASO, TX- Saturday morning, On 08-27-2011 at approximately 2:15 AM  El Paso County Sheriff’s Office Special Traffic Investigators were summoned to the 13200 block of Pellicano Dr., El Paso County, TX in reference to an MVA.

According to Sheriff’s Office STI’s, the driver of a 2008 Nissan Altima was traveling at a high rate of speed westbound at the 13200 block of Pellicano Dr. when for an unknown reason lost control of the vehicle. The driver was accompanied by his girlfriend at the time of the accident. The driver tried to gain control of the vehicle, however, overcorrected his movement causing the vehicle to slide sideways through the eastbound lane of Pellicano Dr. and off the roadway into the south desert area. The vehicle’s right tires dug into a sand berm causing it to become airborne.

The vehicle rolled over several times and came to rest on its upright position (approximately 112 feet from the dirt berm).  The driver was ejected from the vehicle as a result of the roll over and landed approximately 52 feet west from the vehicle’s resting point.  The driver was transported to Del Sol Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. The passenger was also transported but with non-life threatening injuries.

The driver was identified as Ryan Lee Herrera (25) and the passenger/girlfriend as Hasabna Leyva (19). At 6:09 AM, Driver/Mr. Herrera was pronounced dead at the hospital. The passenger was admitted to the hospital for non-threatening injuries.

Speed and alcohol were possible contributing factors of the crash. The investigation continues with toxicology results pending.
