EL PASO, TX- On Sunday, 08-14-11 at approximately 1:00 am Sheriff Deputies responded to the 200 block of S. Darrington Rd. in the City of Horizon, TX to assist Horizon Police Department with a MVA involving a fatality. Dispatch advised CPR was in progress by the on scene officers after a pedestrian was struck by a pick-up truck.
Horizon Fire Department and Life Ambulance were on scene. The scene was turned over to the El Paso County Sheriff Office/Special Traffic Investigators who were summoned to the scene.
Investigations revealed the Driver/Pedestrian and his wife were returning from Red Sands when his vehicle, a black 1988 Ford Bronco, stalled on the roadway, southbound lane (outside lane), at the 200 block S. Darrington Rd. When the pedestrian exited the driver’s seat, he was struck by a 2001 Ford Ranger pick-up truck traveling on the same southbound lane on Darrington Rd. According to a witnesses, the pedestrian was standing at the rear left corner of the Ford Bronco when he attempted to avoid being struck by the oncoming truck. The Driver of the Ford Ranger then veered to the left, striking the pedestrian. The Ford Ranger rolled over on to its side and slid until it came to a complete stop.
The pedestrian died on scene and was identified as Ernesto Sotelo (57) of San Elizario, TX.
The driver of the Ford Ranger was the sole occupant of the vehicle. The driver of the pick-up truck was identified as Jose P. Olivas (50).
The investigation continues.
